Webhose.io Tips & Tricks: Search for Reviews

Posted on December 10, 2014 by

Are you looking to focus your data search specifically on consumer generated reviews?

Here are a couple of simple Webhose.io tricks that might help:

Limit your query to specific sites

You can limit your search to specific “review sites” like amazon.com, bestbuy.com, newegg.com, cnet.com, engadget.com, pcmag.com etc..

Here is an example for how you should phrase your request:

https://webhose.io/search?token=<your-token>&format=json&q=Iphone&site=amazon.com&site=bestbuy.com&site=newegg.com&site=cnet.com&site=engadget.com&site=pcmag.com

This will search for the keyword “iPhone”, but limit the results only to the sources mentioned above.

Search only in sections where the section name includes the word “Reviews”

If you don’t want to limit your query to specific “review sites”, you can try a broader search where you search for posts containing a certain keyword, posted in a section of the site, where the name of the section contains the keyword “Reviews”. Here is an example:

https://webhose.io/search?token=<your-token>&format=json&q=iphone%20thread.section_title%3A(reviews)

Filtering posts by the section they were posted in, is a powerful technique to get higher relevancy. I highly recommend using it, if you don’t get the relevant result via your simple Boolean query.
